Colored Candle Sand: Granulated Sand Wax for Layered Candles

Colored candle sand is plant-based wax granulated into fine, free-flowing grains and colored through the batch. You pour it — you do not melt it — and it holds whatever shape you give it, which is why it has become the material behind layered sand candles, decorative glass fills and DIY candle kits. POSISION produces granulated sand wax in our own plant in Henan, China, alongside the pearl grade of the same wax family. What exactly is colored candle sand?

Candle sand starts as a plant wax — palm-based in our range — which is formed into small granules rather than poured into blocks. The grain is what makes the difference. Loose granules level themselves in a container, pour cleanly around an object, and can be packed layer over layer without a melting pot, a thermometer or a pouring jug anywhere in the process.

Colour is added through the batch rather than painted on the surface, so a layer of sand keeps its tone all the way through the depth of the fill. That matters for the layered look: if colour sat only on the outside of each grain, the boundary between two layers would read as a muddy seam as soon as the sand settled.

Because the granules are loose, the format also survives handling that a poured candle does not. A filled glass can be topped up, re-levelled, or rearranged by hand, and the flame itself stays in the holder rather than in the wax body.

Pearl granule or colored sand — which grade do you need?

These are two grades of the same wax family and they sell into different jobs, so it is worth separating them before you brief a supplier.

• Pearl grade — the frosted, pearl-like bead used as a refillable fill in decorative vases. It reads like crushed ice or fine sand through glass, and it is sold as a colour-matched refill so a customer can re-buy the same vase. See the sand wax (wax beads) page.
• Colored sand grade — the finer, dyed granule used for layered colour work, glass fills and craft projects. The colour is the product, which is why the range is built around shades and layer combinations rather than around one signature bead. That is what this page covers.

How do you build a layered sand candle?

Layering is the whole technique, and it is done cold. Pour the first colour to the depth you want, settle the surface, then pour the next colour on top. Nothing is heated, so the layers never bleed into each other and the boundaries stay sharp.

Two practical points decide whether the result looks professional. First, pour the sand slightly proud of the final level and settle it by tapping the glass, because granules compact a little under their own weight. Second, plan the layer thickness against the container: a narrow vessel makes thin layers hard to control, while a straight-sided glass keeps every band an even thickness from top to bottom.

The same loose granule is what makes the format easy to merchandise. Colourways can be swapped season by season inside one container design, and a retail customer can rebuild the look at home instead of waiting for a new candle.

Does the colour hold between batches?

Colour consistency is the first question buyers ask, usually after a refill that did not match the original fill. Sand wax is coloured in controlled production lots, and in-house QC matches each batch against the approved sample before it is packed. The approved sample — not a colour name on a purchase order — is the reference every following batch is judged against.

Custom shades are part of the service. What should you check before ordering bulk candle sand?

Run three checks with the free sample, and each one protects a different part of the launch.

• Colour under your lights. Photograph the sample in your own store or studio lighting, because the same shade reads differently under warm shop lighting and cold daylight.
• Layer behaviour in your container. Build one layered fill in the actual glass you plan to sell, then look at it a day later — settling and any visible grain contrast are easier to judge after the fill has rested.
• Handling and dust. Pour a full container by hand and watch for dust and static, because that determines your packaging and your instruction copy.

None of these need a lab. They need one afternoon and the sample bag.
