Cotton Candle Wicks in Bulk — Plain or Pre-Tabbed

Cotton candle wicks are the one component a candle cannot be tested without, and they are the component buyers most often leave to the last minute. POSISION supplies them in bulk from our own plant in Henan, China — flat cotton wick by the bag, plain or pre-tabbed — because the same wick runs through our sand wax and candle making kit lines, so it is sized and tested in-house rather than bought in blind.

What the two wick formats are for

We supply the flat cotton wick in two states, and the choice follows your production line rather than the candle.

• Plain wick by the bag. Long lengths of flat cotton wick for makers who cut their own and set it with a tab and a centering tool during pouring. It is the flexible option — one bag covers several candle diameters — and it is the format our own production lines cut from.
• Pre-tabbed wick packs. Cotton wick already crimped onto metal sustainer tabs, supplied in packs of 100 with stickers and a centering device, so a wick drops into the container and stands straight with no assembly. Our listing describes this pack as a low-smoke wick, and it is the format most candle making kits and small studios use.

The tabbed pack is the higher unit cost and the lower labour cost. On a production line the arithmetic usually favours pre-tabbed; on a craft range where the maker enjoys the assembly, plain wick is the better buy.

Wick sizing matters more than wick type

A wick is not a generic part. It is a diameter decision, and the difference between a good candle and a bad one is usually the wick being one size out rather than the wax being wrong.

The size has to do three things at once: melt the wax across the full width of the container, keep the flame at the height the wick is rated for, and burn down without tunnelling or drowning. Change any one input — the wax base, the fragrance load, the colour, the container diameter — and the correct wick can move a size.

That is why sizing is done on a sample rather than on a table. Tell us the container diameter, the wax base and the fragrance load you have settled on, and we match the wick to it and test the burn on the format you intend to sell. If you have already tested a wick that works, send the specification and we match that instead — copy the wick you have proven, not the one that looks similar.

Cotton, blends and what the label is allowed to say

Cotton wicks matter to buyers for a reason that has nothing to do with burn performance: a cotton wick lets a brand describe the wick on the label without qualification.

That has two practical consequences. First, confirm the wick you approve is the wick in the bulk order, because a substitution at production changes what the label can claim. Second, keep the wick specification in the approved pre-production sample, so the tested wick and the shipped wick are the same item.

What to check on a wick sample

Three checks, all cheap, all done before the bulk order.

• Burn test in the real container. Light one wick of each candidate size in the actual jar with the actual wax and fragrance. Watch the melt pool reach the edge, then watch the second hour — a wick that is too large will mushroom and smoke, and one that is too small will tunnel.
• Trim height. Wick length above the wax decides a lot of the burn, so agree the finished wick height with the sample rather than trimming to taste on the bulk run.
• Tab adhesion. On pre-tabbed wicks, check that the tab grips the glass or the wax the way your line needs, because a loose tab tilts the wick and tilts the burn with it.

How do MOQ, samples and ordering work?

MOQ is quoted per project against your volume rather than as a blanket number, and wick is supplied by the bag so a production schedule is priced in the unit you actually cut or pick. Free samples ship so you can burn-test the size before you commit, and wick orders placed with a wax order are quoted together.
