Scented wax melt cubes in cream, yellow and brown in a clamshell tray with a retail label

Scented wax melts are fragrance carried in solid wax that melts over a warmer instead of burning on a wick. POSISION supplies them as cube melts from our own plant in Henan, China — in retail clamshell packs with your label, or in bulk for brands that pack in their own market. This page covers what the format is, why it carries more scent than a candle, and how the pack and the fragrance get specified.

What exactly is a wax melt?

A wax melt is scented wax with no wick and no container. You break off a cube, drop it into the cup of a wax warmer sitting over a tealight or an electric element, and the wax melts and releases its fragrance into the room. Nothing ignites, so there is no flame to watch, no wick to trim and no soot to clean off a jar.

That difference is the whole product. A candle is a burn cycle you manage; a melt is scent you switch on. For a household with children or pets, or a shelf where an open flame is not practical, the format does the same job as a scented candle with none of the fire.

It also changes the consumption pattern, and that matters for a brand. A melt is not finished when the wax is gone — it is finished when the scent has faded, and then the cube is tipped out and replaced. A customer who likes the scent re-buys the melt, not the warmer.

Why melts carry more scent than a candle

The fragrance load in a melt can be much higher than in a poured candle, and the reason is mechanical rather than commercial.

In a candle the wax has to burn. A high fragrance load changes how the melt pool behaves, which puts a practical ceiling on how much oil a candle formula will carry before the burn suffers — a wick that is right for a lightly scented candle will drown in a heavily scented one. In a melt there is no wick and no flame, so the wax is only ever a carrier: nothing has to burn cleanly, and the oil can be pushed much further.

The trade-off is on the label. Higher fragrance means a higher cost per gram of wax, and the melt format is where the fragrance is nearly the entire value of the product. That is why the scent decision drives the price far more than it does on a candle line.

Cubes, clamshells and bulk packs

The line is supplied in three practical forms, and the choice is usually a channel decision rather than a production one.

  • Cube melts in a clamshell. The pack in our photography is a 3 oz clamshell tray holding cubed melts with a printed label. It is the retail-ready option: the pack is the unit, it carries your brand and your scent name, and it sits on a rack without needing a shelf-talker.
  • Bulk cubes in PVC boxes. Where you pack and label in your own market, the melts ship bulk so you control the branding and the pack weight locally. It is the leaner option on freight and on unit cost.
  • Tinted and untinted. The photographed range runs cream, yellow and brown cubes, so colour can follow the scent story — a warm amber for a woody note, a pale cube for a clean one. Colour is a specification item, so say what you want rather than assuming a default.

Pack weight is quoted per project. Send the pack you intend to sell — 3 oz, 6 cubes, a gift tin — and the quote comes back on that unit rather than on a general price per kilogram.

Where the format sells

Three channels carry wax melts well, and each buys the product for a different reason.

  • Retail and gift. Melts are an entry-priced scented product that sits next to candles on the same shelf and sells to the customer who already owns a warmer. The pack does the merchandising.
  • Subscription and discovery ranges. Because the format is small and the scent changes with every drop, melts fit a monthly scent programme better than a candle does — the customer is buying variety, not burn time.
  • Refills. The warmer is the durable purchase and the melts are the repeat. A brand that sells both owns the second sale, which is the same refill logic that makes our sand wax vase format work in retail.

If your range is built around a flame and a burn claim instead, a private label scented candle carries your branding further on a shelf, and a floating candle is the better fit for table and event work.

Choosing the fragrance for a melt

Fragrance is the product here, so specify it the way you would specify a perfume brief rather than an accessory.

Send a reference — a competitor melt, a candle whose scent you want to work from, a bottle of oil to match, or a written profile with the top, middle and base notes. We compound the oil to that brief and then agree the strength on a pre-production sample.

Strength is the step buyers underestimate. Because the load can be pushed high, the same oil at two different loads gives two genuinely different products, and the higher load is the more expensive one. Agree the load in the sample and the bulk run matches it; change it afterwards and the run is a new specification.

For buyers in the EU and UK, remember that the fragrance documentation travels with the product: an IFRA statement and a safety data sheet for the oil, plus the allergen declarations the label needs. Our guide to IFRA, REACH and MSDS documents explains what each one covers.

What about MOQ, samples and ordering?

MOQ is set per project and quoted against your volume rather than as a blanket figure, and scented orders are quoted on the scent brief and the pack you send. Free samples ship with the COA of their batch, and the order moves through a pre-production sample that you approve before the bulk run. Every batch is QC-checked in-house before shipment and leaves with its own COA.

Send the RFQ with your scent brief, the pack weight and the channel you sell into. You get a reply within 24 hours by WhatsApp or phone at +86 133 8403 0866, or by email to kris@posision.com.

Wax melts sell on the first sniff, so approve the sample before you print the label. Send an RFQ with your scent brief and pack spec, or Request a quote and ask for the free sample with the batch COA.

FAQ

Scented Wax Melts: buyer questions

What is a wax melt?

It is scented wax with no wick. You break off a cube, drop it into the cup of a warmer over a tealight or an electric element, and the wax melts and releases its fragrance into the room. Nothing ignites, so there is no flame to watch and no soot on a jar.

How is a melt different from a candle?

A candle is the fragrance plus a flame and a burn cycle. A melt is the fragrance on its own: no wick, no flame, and a much higher fragrance load per gram because nothing has to burn cleanly. It is the format for buyers who want scent without fire.

What pack sizes do you offer?

Our photography shows a 3 oz clamshell with a printed label, and the line is also supplied in bulk PVC boxes for brands that pack and label in their own market. Pack weight is quoted per project — send the unit you intend to sell and we price that.

Can you match a fragrance?

Yes. Send a reference fragrance, a competitor melt or a written profile with the notes you are aiming at, and we compound the oil to it. Because melts carry a high fragrance load, the pre-production sample is where the strength and the cost are agreed.

What MOQ and samples do you offer?

MOQ is set per project and quoted against your volume, and scented orders are quoted on the scent brief and the pack you send. Free samples ship with the batch COA, and the order moves through a pre-production sample you approve before the bulk run.
